Sending an eMail message after certing server actions, e.g. Scanner finished.

Hi there,

I am thinking about a way of getting an eMail via the systems mailer telling me that a certain server actions has finished.
Taking the example that a library scans has stopped:
How would I get that working if that feature already exists? How would I have to implement that (where to start)?
